Blood Glucose Testing

Marunong na kong magtest ng blood glucose!!!

Last Monday we went to lab not knowing what we were supposed to do. When my lab professor announced the lecture for that day, I felt cold and thought "I'm not freaking ready for this!" My other classmates (FYI they're more experienced than I am, having worked as physician assistants, CNAs and even MDs) were like "Ah that's no biggie." I swear, if not for my lab professor blocking the doorway, I would have ran out and not come back! That's how scared I am of needles! Imagine sticking people with it! I just can't seem to imagine myself doing it.

But no, I'm not getting this off easily, I know. My classmates were goading and teasing me like crazy. One of them even told me "C'mon stick me, you chicken." With my other classmates and lab professor looking on, I know I had to do it. This is not just for me but for my clients (and my dad) as well. So there. I did it. My classmate commented that my hands were cold during the entire procedure (naku kala mo naman napaka-komplikado ng ginawa ko). Sheesh. Well at least that's over and done with. That's one skill crossed off my I-don't-like-it-but-I-must-get-over-it-as-soon-as-possible list. God help me when it's time to stick a real patient.

Writing SOAP Notes

My teachers and classmates were amazed on how I do my SOAP notes. They've been praising my papers, for the attention to detail were really evident. Dapat lang no! Three years in SOAP-writing, hundreds of initial evaluations and re-evaluations, countless revisions, and horrifying SOAP exams, of course I'll be (sort of) a pro in writing notes. Actually it was a surprise to me when I found out that they're not that keen in examining the nitty-gritty details on our notes. The day we passed our first SOAP, you should have seen my paper compared to the other students'. Mine was immaculately clean and printed out with all the proper format and everything. My classmates' however, were handwritten in paper obviously ripped from a notebook. No, I'm not boasting or anything. It was just... I don't know... weird I guess. After CAMP and its rigorous training, I find it difficult to believe that OCC is not as intense. It's like it's not a concern at this time, that writing these notes is problem 11 in a problem list of 10, that it's actually not a part of a problem list, and that it's not part of their plan to teach us how to do it. Not that I'm complaining. In fact, I find it enjoyable -- writing notes without the fear of failing the subject just because you didn't include drooling as part of your problem list. From what I observe, OCC's main concern is the practical and theoretical side of the health care profession -- something CAMP did not reiterate as much. I guess from OCC's point of view, writing excellent SOAP notes is not a requirement, just a plus point.

A Day in the OR

I went to the Operating Room (OR) in LGH last week. I forgot to blog it. My mind was still reeling because of the incident that happened the same day (read April 8 post). Anyway I witnessed a real surgery. It was a laparascopic cholecystectomy (the surgical removal of the gallbladder). Using advanced laparascopic technology, the removal of the gallbladder is now possible through a small incision in the navel. (A laparascope by the way is a tiny camera.) There's no major incision but just three puncture holes. The surgeon inserts the laparascope through one of these holes. Other long instruments are passed through the other holes. The whole procedure is monitored and viewed by the surgeon on a television. The patient's abdomen is then filled with CO2 to create room for the surgeon to carry out the operation. The blood vessels and the bile duct are clipped and the gallbladder is then detached, collapsed and drawn out through one of the punctures holes like an empty balloon. It was not as gross as I thought it would be. On the other hand, it was really fascinating. I couldn't get my eyes off of the TV. Things I know about the human body were limited to cadavers. To see a gallbladder LIVE and up close really made me appreciate the human body even more. Besides having seen a gallbladder and what it can mean if it's not properly taken care of made me even more motivated to maintain an active lifestyle. You should have seen the patient's insides! The stomach and intestines were barely recognizable amidst all the fats! Eww! I wouldn't want that to happen to me. Not in this lifetime.

The Apprentice

... is Bill Rancic!

Bill Rancic

(Aint he a cutie? Smart pa. Hihi.)

I'm proud to say that the apprentice, William "Bill" Rancic is from Chicago. He's a cigar business owner who founded cigarsaroundtheworld.com eight years ago, a thriving multi-million venture today. Based on his profile from The Apprentice website, I think he's a really good pick for Trump's organization. He's charming, streetsmart, practical -- a true entrepreneur. He proved himself worthy by organizing a golf tournament which would raise money for diabetics (something like that). I think it was a really hard job. I mean organizing an event in three days?! I can only imagine how insane that would be. He was really outstanding. Kwame too. Although I don't like his style of doing business. I just don't get how he can be so laidback when Omarosa is deceiving him openly! It's just... unnatural. Anyway Bill was given, as a prize, the choice of working in Chicago (overseeing Trump's project of building a 90-storey hotel) or in California (overseeing the upheaval and renewal of a golf course). Of course he chose Chicago. :) BTW, he got to win a Chrysler car too. Wow.

Even though I'm sick of watching these reality TV shows, I can't seem to abandon The Apprentice. At least it's not as trashy as the other shows are. Besides, I think it's more reality-oriented than what the other shows have been showing (The Swan, Highschool Reunion, Classmates). I learned some valuable lessons too although I heard complaints from CEOs of companies like Golden West Financial. According to them, "The Apprentice is to the real business world what Homer Simpson is to real fatherhood" and "the show is a cartoon version of the real world." Well that's Donald Trump for you. :)

Anyway here's a nugget of wisdom from our favorite backstabber err contestant Omarosa: "Recipe for Success: Study while others are sleeping; work while others are loafing; prepare while others are playing; and dream while others are wishing." It's nice but still, she's a bitch.
