As Insane As It Gets

Over the years, the stigma of having a psychiatric disorder has not declined, as opposed to the stigma of having cancer or AIDS. Having the 2 latter diseases is not considered a disgrace as compared to having schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. I guess, this has caused our (my classmates and I) apprehension and anxiety in meeting and handling psych patients. Whenever we talk about psychiatric illnessess, we tend to imagine Hannibal-like patients. Believe me, that's not the way to calm yourself when you know you're going to interact with psych patients. However, to my surprise, my psych rotation has been one of the most enjoyable (and funniest!) clinical rotations I've had this year. Expect your patients to make your day interestingly unique.

  • A 37 year-old Caucasian male with bipolar disorder exhibiting manic episode who kept chasing me! The thing that surprises me most is he's wheelchair-bound (poor balance) but would always get up whenever he sees me. Freakyyyy!

  • A 68 year old schizophrenic female patient who is highly combative but is all nice when the nursing students talk to her; she would grab my hand and say "I love you, L___. You are so beautiful L___. Your hands are so soft. I love you L___" -- freaky! -- she would say that with eyes UNBLINKING, looking straight at you. Freaky but funny when I think about it.

  • A 17 year-old patient with bipolar disorder, manic episode exhibiting delusions of grandeur ("I'm like Einstein you know. I'm smarter than the doctors and nurses. I have sixth sense too. I can feel when someone is suffering or dying. I can see spirits and ghosts too"), loose associations (jumping from one topic to another), and hallucinations. It was a great learning experience just talking to her. This patient exhibits all the textbook symptoms and I know I'll be thinking of her during our Psych exam. Hehe.

But it has also been the most depressing, in a way.

  • A 6 year-old African-American female patient who was born addicted to cocaine, was sexually abused by a cousin, & was physically abused by mother; also has poor impulse control, sexually acting out (ie touching other people inappropriately, saying inappropriate comments, etc - I guess this kid thinks it's normal because apparently somebody did it to her), and hyperactive

  • A 4 year-old kid physically abused by parents; diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has behavior problems (defying authority, poor impulse control); also exhibits poor self esteem and has suicidal ideations

  • A 15 year-old female adolescent who sees herself as a "big fat glob" and mutilates herself

I don't know about you but this just makes me sad. A 4 and 6 year-old kid in a psychiatric hospital?!? I just had a hard time dealing with it especially when I reviewed their charts. Their parents should not have been allowed to live... or to have kids at least. At such a young age, these kids have been exposed to the evils of our society. It's just wrong. :(

Well there you have it, the funniest and yet, the most depressing field of nursing -- psychiatric nursing.

Very interesting. I envy you for such experiences but it's true how saddening it can be to meet children in those kind of state. Good luck with your schooling!

nakakalungkot nga... specially the kids.

Remember that old song "Sino ang Baliw?". It alludes that people with mental disorders are luckier than people born "normal" but whose hearts are uncapable of loving? I know the song is just being poetic, but considering that some people with disorders are disturbed by something they seem to see or hear or feel all the time, are they actually luckier than the "normal" ones?

I guess everyone has their own version of tribulations...

At 3:13 PM, Blogger loryces commented...

Dona: hay sinabi mo. it breaks my heart to see children in those state. :( thanks!

Ate Sienna: actually i thought of that too. i guess in a way people with psychiatric illnessess are lucky. they dont have to deal with the everyday 'evils' of the world.

Weird Stuff

Just want to share some stuff I found while browsing the net (which made me laugh and cringe at the same time):

The Boyfriend Pillow
Haha! A stuffed headless torso with an arm that curls around the sleeper -- I think I want one. Not that I'm desperate, mind you. Anyway according to Gizmo, "they've eliminated all the sounds and smells of the standard boyfriend and have even added an alarm clock which gently shakes the arm when it's time to get up." Haha! I really must shake the hands of the person who invented this.

Sushi USB
Found this via Neil Gaiman's journal. Apparently, he was amused by a sushi-shaped USB. Well who wouldn't be?

Aquariass anyone?

Now this is just totally bizarre. Why would anyone want to buy an aquarium-slash-toilet (hence Aquariass)? Just plain wacko, if you ask me. Somehow, you get the feeling you're being watched. Hehe.

Know some other weird stuff people are selling? Send them in! I'd like to be amused.

Meeting Sean Astin...

... last Oct 17 was one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had!!! Anyway before I turn into a complete fangirl, let me start my story...

At 12nn, we arrived at Borders bookstore in Chicago. My friend and I decided to fall in line since the signing is at 2pm. We were dumbfounded when we saw the line. We were a little bit dismayed since it might mean we won't have a chance to meet Sean. I think there were over 200 people in front of us and we know that Sean has to leave at 3:30pm. Signing is at 2 so that leaves us an hour and a half until it's our turn. Pero dibale, basta makamayan ko lang sya, ok na ko -- yun na lang naisip ko eh. To pass the time, I memorized what I was going to say to him. Hehe.

At 1pm, the door near us suddenly opened. Lo and behold! It's Sean Astin! Eeeeek! Wow seeing him in the flesh, RIGHT IN FRONT of you, an arm's length away -- it took all my willpower not to faint (and scream at the same time) then and there. Of course, it was a good photo opportunity. When he got to the front, he started discussing the process of making the book, etc. I didn't have a chance to hear him discuss because we're waaay at the back of the 3rd level. After the discussion, the line started moving. We were only allowed to bring the book for Sean to sign. Such a pity because in other states, fans are allowed to bring another item. However, since Sean was in a hurry, the management at Borders decided that the book was enough.

Anyway when it was my turn, I asked my friend if she can take Sean's picture, with me shaking his hands! I also took his pic using my phone! I can feel my hands shaking, trying to steady myself! After taking his pic, I extended my hand towards him and we shook hands! WE SHOOK HANDS! I almost forgot what I'm supposed to say when I saw him right in front of me. Good thing I had the sense to tell him thank you from TPTS. He told me

Well tell the Philippine Tolkien Society, thank you for the support you've given me.

Gosh I should have recorded it! I must have been so starstruck by then that I forgot all about the voice recorder function of my phone. It was such a thrill being there, talking to him, shaking his hands!! Unbelievable. I wanted to ask him "Can I hug you?" however there were 2 bodyguards beside him. Next time maybe. Anyway I just asked him if he could write my name when he signs my book and he did!

After meeting Sean, my friend and I were all giggles and smiles. It really was fun hanging out with him even for a few minutes. Such a pity since it was just for a little while. It was fun while it lasted though.

More pictures here.

An Event I'd Just as Soon NOT Forget

I watched the LOTR Symphony last October 8 at the Auditorium Theater and it was a blast! It was really amazing just being there. Absolutely electrifying to say the least. Anyway let me start from the very beginning...

I was at the theater at exactly 10 minutes before 5. Tried opening the door but to no avail. Usherette came and asked me if there's anything she could do. Told her I came for the LOTR concert. She was a bit flustered and exclaimed "we'll be opening doors at 6. it's not even 5 yet." Hehe. So anyway since I don't have any place to go, I just waited. I was scared to go out and look around the city -- I might get lost. Don't want to take any chances. Anyway, saw some kids coming and going who were members of the choir performing that day, apparently preparing for the show. 3 other people came and entered the theater. Didn't know that one of them was Doug Adams, author of the upcoming book The Music of the Lord of the Rings to be released next year. If only knew!

1 hour later...

People started coming in twos and threes. At 10 minutes past six, they finally let us in. *excitement creeping in* Went inside Auditorium Theater and gasped at the immensity of the structure. Very ornate murals. Very, very nice interior. Anyway we waited for another 5 minutes before Doug Adams came and told us that Howie couldn't make it *groans and sighs* but he said he'll be answering any questions we might have to the best of his ability. To tell you the truth, I couldn't understand half of what they were saying. I recorded it anyway although it'll be hard transcribing it. Questions asked included something about Silmarillion and any plans they might have in performing it (not that he knew, Doug said), how did Howie knew where to find the rare instruments used in the music (Howie knew people who knew people that played those instruments), how involved Howie is in the movie (very involved, doug said), the 9-disc set (might be released next year), and of course the book regarding the LOTR music (also to be released next year)... and that's all I can remember. Interview was almost 30 minutes long. Pity Howie didn't make it. Oh well. So anyway after the interview was done, we went outside the lobby since it's time for the participants to get ready for the show.

At 8:00, we went back to our designated seats and we saw the participants getting ready, tuning their instruments and checking the musical sheets. Just seeing them made me go "I'm really here! I'm watching the LOTR concert!" It's so surreal. Anyway 10 minutes past 8, lights were dimmed and the conductor Mark Huber came out *applause* And the symphony started... First note pa lang, sobrang WOW. It's really something to listen to the music firsthand. Not from a CD player or radio but seeing the musicians play it and listening to it at the same time. It's ... it's... a-MA-zing! The music is basically what's in the soundtracks. Anyway here's a list of what they played:

First movement: The Prophecy -- Concerning Hobbits -- The Shadow of the Past -- A short Cut to Mushrooms -- The Old Forest -- A Knife in the Dark

Second Movement: Many meetings -- The Ring goes south -- A journey in the dark -- The Bridge of Khazad-dum -- Lothlorien -- Gandalf's Lament -- Farewell to Lorien -- The Great River -- The Breaking of the Fellowship

Other parts were not as powerful as I've hoped they would be. But it must have something to do with the seating. I was in the orchestra section and it might have been better if i'm up in the balcony -- better acoustics. Oh well lesson learned there. Regarding my fave parts, I'm so happy it's what I've imagined!! The shadow of the past, journey in the dark and the Khazad-dum parts were really powerful. You could feel the intensity of the music. There were also illustrations by Lee and Howe, which was projected on a screen above the orchestra. Some of it I haven't seen before. I was also unable to concentrate on the screen since there was a really cute violinist. He was so cute that it took a lot of willpower on my part to concentrate on the music and not him. Hehe. Anyway the lighting effects were great, matching the themes -- red for Balrog and Moria part, green for Shire and Lothlorien I think, etc.

Third to six movements next. By this part, Sissel, a musician from Scandinavia, came into the picture. She did the vocals for Evenstar, Gollum's Song, and Into the West (and some Elvish vocalizations too). She was just amazing! Her voice was intense and powerful. Goosebumps all over.

Third Movement: Foundations of Stone -- The taming of smeagol -- The Riders of Rohan -- The balck gate is closed -- Evenstar -- The White Rider -- Treebeard -- The Forbidden Pool

Fourth Movement: The Hornburg-- Forth Eorlingas -- Isengard Unleashed -- Gollum's Song

The Two Towers part were short -- a little over 30 minutes. Of course, the memorable parts are the Rohan themes. As I've imagined, the Rohan parts are utterly superb!!! Just WOW.

Fifth Movement: Hope and Memory -- The White tree -- The steward of gondor -- Cirith Ungol -- Anduril

Sixth Movement: The end of all things -- The Return of the King -- The Grey Havens -- Into the West

The lighting of the beacons part was magnificent! It was just freakin' amazing! No CD player can top that. Sissel was fabulous when she sang Into the West although I would have preferred Lennox still.

After the sixth movement, there was thunderous applause from the audience. Standing ovation!!! Applause lasted ~10 minutes. Got louder when Shore appeared onstage. He made it! I can't believe I SAW HIM! The face behind the music of LOTR -- creator of Into the West and the Grey Havens song, of the Fellowship theme, of Aniron, of the Rohan theme, lighting of the beacons theme... WOW! Even if I didnt meet him, seeing him onstage is just indescribably wow. One experience I'd just as soon NOT forget. It was just awesome. Words fail me. Just FREAKIN' AWESOME.

Anyway after the concert, there was a reception held at the 2nd floor. It was another separate payment of 75 f*cking dollars. If only I had money, I wouldn't hesitate to pay for the event. Alas, no such luck. Still, I decided to hang around and maybe Eru would have mercy on me and let me see Shore. But again, no luck. My uncle will be picking me up at 10:40. It was 10:30 when I went up the 2nd floor and I still have to walk. I decided then to leave. Sigh. Oh well no matter. The memory of the event was enough for me. Thank you Lord for this opportunity!

I've never been this excited...

... since I went to Chicago last year for the ROTK premiere. Few things could make me this wired -- going to Chicago for a LOTR gig for one. This coming Friday, Oct 8, I'll be watching the LOTR syymphony in the Auditorium Theater and you can well imagine how excited I must be. I have an exam tomorrow and all I can think about is what I'm going to bring on Friday and how to get there without getting lost. My classmates think I'm insane to miss class (it overlaps with the concert's sched). My family's pretty annoyed about it, never failing to mutter "Lord of the Rings na naman?!" (Lord of the Rings again?!) Ah well they just don't understand. Anyway I'll take pictures and update my photo-moblog now and then. Hopefully I'll meet Howie and give him a present from TPTS. See you in a day or so!

Aging in a Nursing Home

Taken using Nokia 3200

For the first half of this semester, our clinical rotation took place in a nursing home as part of our Geriatrics class. I enjoyed this part of the course because I like taking care of elderly people -- I just love 'em to bits. Of course, like all age groups, they have their downs... and yes, most of the people I've taken care of these past 6 weeks were sun-downers. Patients with Alzheimer's disease or some form of dementia were assigned to me. I didn't mind it at all although it got me thinking about aging, especially aging in a nursing home. How terribly sad it must be to live your last days in some institution where you know nobody and everything's a whole lot different from what you're used to. How hard it must be for these patients, especially the ones with dementia, to find unfamiliarity and animosity lurking 'round the corners, not knowing where to look for compassion or empathy. Even having a debilitating disease can't be worse than not having someone care (in the truest and sincerest form) for you.

And sometimes the same people who should take care of these patients are the ones hurting them (accidental or otherwise). These patients are under the care (and mercy) of nursing assistants (and even nurses) who couldn't (or wouldn't) give a damn if the prosthesis is in place or if the patient got nearly fractured because of improper turning and positioning. (It just saddens me that some people are being allowed to do these horrendous acts.) Sigh.

Two weeks ago, I had the chance of being assigned to the Alzheimer's unit of this particular nursing home (picture above). One particular resident I observed in the unit was restless that day. According to the charge nurse, he's of the wandering type and can easily get agitated over little things. He walks around the unit, snatching food from other patients and picking up things from the medicine cart. Apprehend him and you're in for a surprise. Anyway, on that particular day, one nursing aide, seeing that they have guests (meaning me and another classmate), decided to impress us by forcing this resident to wear a toy (a backpack with a baby in it) on his back. He then laughed at the resident after successfully doing the deed. Ayun, the resident got agitated. He won't take his meds and even threw it across the room, punched the guy, and swore at everyone. Took a while to calm him down. Tsk, tsk. Now tell me who in their right mind would do such a thing? If it were up to me, that would be the aide's last day in the nursing home. He gave the health profession a bad name, a bad image. Many people have Alzheimer's disease and most of them don't know what's happening to them, much less the world. But this doesn't mean that anyone can have their way with them. On the contrary, as part of the healthcare team, one should show compassion, even if it means not being appreciated.
