Hotmail to Follow Suit

The email storage boost started when Google announced in April that it plans to launch Gmail. Yahoo followed suit. So now we have Gmail with 1 GB and Yahoo with 100 MB. How about Hotmail? Well, apparently they are going to counter their rival companies with a 250 MB free email account. Seems tempting but for people who actually use Hotmail, one can only counter "hay naku more space for junk mail". *snicker*

The upgrade will increase Hotmail's free e-mail storage limits from 2 megabytes to 250MB and its paid e-mail service, which costs $19.95 a year, from 10MB to 2 gigabytes. The changes will begin in early July.

Tsk! All these coming up and I don't even know what to do with so much space. I've run out of interest to forward mails and since I stopped, I stopped receiving them too... hehe.

LOL@Jet.
Alam mo, totoo yan. I have a hotmail account but I seldom use it. Puro spam lang nakukuha ko dun. Tapos ayoko ng interface nya, user-unfriendly. I have this tendency to delete mails kasi sanay ako na laging overquota. Now, I have so much space to use up, pero I keep on deleting them anyway at hanggang 5Mb lang natitira lagi sa account ko. :D

Jet: LOL!

Galen: exactly! how do they expect people to support their service if it does not meet the user's expectations? ngayon pa sila nag-isip ng ganyan after google launched its gmail. too late tsk tsk!

Paranoia Kicks In

***PARANOIA MODE ON***

Almost two years ago, I left my country with so much regret and unhappiness. At that time, I was so mad at my mom for ever forcing me to leave the Philippines and instead live here in the US. I never wanted this life in the first place anyway. I never wanted to come here. Never thought of it. Never imagined what it's like living here. Many people wanted it but not me. I was so angry with my mom for forcing her decision on me, angry with myself for not fighting for what I want, angry with the rest of the world because they seem so happy and I'm not. I kept thinking she's my mother yes, but she doesn't own me. She doesn't fuck1ng own me. I was pretty tired of that "mother knows best" bullsh1t. God, I hated all of it back then.

How about today you ask? Well I'm not sure. I'm not so sure about a lot of things these days. Everyday I feel I'm becoming more afraid but at the same time, a little bit, I dunno, at peace I guess. I'm really not sure why I'm having these feelings. I don't even know what the heck I'm talking about. Basta I'm afraid these days, that's for sure. I'm afraid that, when I come back, I might not know my friends anymore. That they won't see the old me but instead a totally different me (which sometimes I feel is a good thing because back then, I kind of felt that I'm nothing when I'm with them; maybe after years of not seeing each other, they'll come to respect me a bit). That they won't listen to what I wanted them to hear. That I won't know how to talk to them anymore. That they'll just be the "classmate ko sya nung college" or "barkada kami dati" type of people. It's hard losing the people you've trusted all these years. It's harder still to start building these foundations all over again.

Another thing that's been bothering me is the dreams I'm having of late. Well not really dreams but more like nightmare-ish flashes I get during the day. I kept having these snatches of things gone wrong with my family -- their supposed deaths, either a plane crash, a terrorist attack, or murder. For days, I wouldn't acknowledge it. All I can do is cry and cry and cry. I have no one to talk to. No one to hold me and tell me everything is okay back home. I'm afraid -- simple as that -- for my family, for the chance to see them again. I feel guilty for the simple fact that I'm here and they are hundreds of miles away from me.

Am I scaring you yet? I'm nearly done, don't worry. Anyway, how bout being at peace you ask? Well, it's just that the realization of what I'm currently doing finally hit me. I realized that I kind of like it here. I can imagine myself living my old days here in the US. Buying books in Barnes & Noble, driving along I-94, going into real estate business, having snow instead of rain, eating Krispy Kreme instead of Mister Donut. I don't mind experiening them at all. For weeks, I denied the feeling. It's like betraying the very being of who I am or abandoning the principles I have held onto for years. Does that make sense to you? I hope so. If you ask me to make it plainer, I swear you'd make my head hurt. Merely thinking about these things makes me feel like I'm on a plane taking off.

The burden (of the Ring) is finally getting to me, methinks. Fear, guilt, responsibility -- I'm turning into Gollum right before my eyes.

***PARANOIA MODE OFF***

I think I need either a strong shot of brandy or one really good and long conversation from someone who wouldn't think I'm joking... or serious.

At 5:35 AM, Blogger u l a n commented...

I think that your anxiety stems simply from the fact that you love your family and you care about how they are. It's just natural, I guess :)

And the peace comes from liking who you are and where you are (as in where you are in your life right now, as well as where you are _literally_)

I'm glad for you, Laurice. I've been waiting for you to say that you like it there. =) Can't wait to hear more about the new friends you'll be making there.

At 9:56 AM, Blogger Unknown commented...

I agree with Ulan. Remember what Romina said?

Liking it there does not mean you don't like it here. Making new friends there does not mean forgetting your old friends here. It's not like you have to choose between the two. All you need to do is feel comfortable wherever you are, learn to adjust and still be yourself.

Easy for me to say but hard for you to do. I know. But you see, we all change and grow even if we're together or we're far apart. We just need to learn how to explore the world and at the same time, hold on to your memories. Not all of us will have that opportunity.

Hey, if I could afford it, I would love to spend a day with you. Miss you a lot! :)

At 1:31 AM, Blogger Jax commented...

No worries, hon. It's evolution. Change is never bad. Besides, nothing in life is certain. It's ok to be scared. Just don't let that fear stop you from doing what you want.

I'll be praying for you, girl! :)

A Quick Tip

I signed up for membership in the Blogger Forum today. I browsed and read some interesting threads regarding blogging. One thread that caught my attention was a tip involving the removal of the banner ad for Blogspot users. What I know is it can be removed by modifying the template or creating a CSS code to cover it up, but of course, it's illegal. Anyway, what some of the bloggers did was e-mail Blogger support and ask them if they'll be kind enough to remove the banner ad. I don't have any idea if this actually worked but what the hey right? No harm in asking I say.

Also, here are some good news for people who are looking for free image hosting sites. Aside from Cybertarp and Photobucket, you can also check out Photopeg and Weblog Images. Both sites offer free image hosting. I signed up for both Photopeg and Weblog Images, although I haven't tried them so I wouldn't know if they're really worth signing up for.

Talaga Naman

Visit this site and you'll see how desperate people can be just for a Gmail account. Well it figures. No annoying ads, clean & easy interface, spam blocker, and of course, one gigabyte of space -- who wouldn't want those features? Browsing this site is so amusing -- reading what some people would do to great lengths just to have an account is such a hoot. They even put up a page of some nifty, neat, and noteworthy swaps. Well don't take my word for it. Go on and take a look. Some of them even offerred a postcard from New Zealand, a lesson in Elvish, and a Lord of the Rings ebook. Patulan ko kaya? Haha.

Oh have you heard of what the other email services are doing though? Well it seems Yahoo is reading Gmail invites as SPAM and is filtering them to the bulk folder. Also, Hotmail is 'bouncing back' Gmail invitations. Tsk, tsk. Naughty, naughty.

A Fossil watch

Oh great. Another perfect LOTR Fossil watch. This time it's a ladies' watch, the latest edition of the Lord of the Rings Collection. It features a delicate Elven pattern on its stainless steel case and cuff; the dial features a molded green enamel Elven symbol. This is just great. What are you trying to do anyway, leech me dry??? Chronicles of Narnia News

Chronicles of Narnia news coming your way!

First, here are some banners from the New York Licensing Show. Features the production art of the White Witch and her castle, Aslan, a Narnian army, and a boy (Peter or Edmund, we shall see). The details are just great! I hope they take care of this beloved book (series).

Second, filming for CoN will begin on June 28. The movie will open in the US in December 25, 2005 (ugh tagal pa).

Third, an interview with Andrew Adamson, director of CoN can be found here.

Last but not the least, James McAvoy of the Children of Dune fame (he played Leto II) is going to be Mr. Tumnus!!! Ack!!! Grabe na to! I developed a major crush on him upon seeing the TV series CoD. Suffice to say, I'll be definitely keeping an eye (or two) on him. Mm-hmm.

That's all the news I have for CoN. Oooh I do hope it'll be good.

Me: Huh? Me? Uh, no. I'm from the Philippines. You know, you're the first person to ask me if I'm from Italy. *thinking: wow naman! taga-Italy daw!*
B.E.: Well it's just that your T-shirt says "Italy."

Ordering in Amazon

I still can't believe how (ultra) expensive the books are in the US. A used Anatomy and Physiology book alone is enough to pay for one sem of tuition and books in UP. One course I have for this summer is English 101 and the book is waaaay over my limit. I'm not going to pay that kind of money for a book I'm sure I'm not going to use after one sem! And so, I opted for the next best thing: Amazon. Their asking price is just a fraction of what the bookstore's charging us. Syempre kinuha ko na. I just hope I did it right.

New Layout!

HA! This blog has been in need of an overhaul for some time now and after 72 grueling hours of tweaking the damn code, I finally fixed it. Some sections are still in the works but hopefully, I'll be able to fix it before summer classes begin (I wish). This is the umpteenth version of my blog with spring/summer theme. I still don't have a header coz I have no idea how to go about making one that screams "Chicago" or "summer." The tiny pic on the top left column that says 'LORYCES ONLINE' is just about what I can think of at the moment. It would do... for now. Anyway I've added new sections which include the ff:

  • a sideblog -- for those short posts or side comments that doesn't warrant a full entry

  • fanlistings -- links to some of the things I love and enjoy

  • credits -- well not entirely new but this time, I added the copyright chuva

  • links -- also not new but I separated my links into 4 different categories: Tatak Pinoy, Imported, Tambayan, and Affiliations; not as confusing as before

  • a "what am I doing?" section -- seems vain but it's mostly for my friends and family who are wondering what I'm up to

  • a reminder section -- well mostly for my benefit hehe

Well I guess that's it. Leave me a note - suggestions, comments, violent reactions - and I'll get back to you. Ta!

LOTR Symphony in Chicago

I wasn't really going to blog today, not until I revamped my site anyway. However, due to unforeseen (but exciting) circumstances, I had to post this specific news. Ticketmaster emailed the local Tolkien group and informed us about a LOTR symphony here in Chicago. Suffice to say, upon reading it, I can definitely tell you that it's one of the longest moments of my life. (Ok ok sige na exag na.) I immediately texted my friends, chatted with whoever's online, blogged about it, and pestered my cousins. Now if only my aunt will permit me (I'm pretty sure she will though), this would all be perfect. Oh yeah here's the URL for that specific listing. I'm definitely going to purchase the $80 ticket. The better to see Shore and the better to hear the music, of course. Ahhh, I can definitely see (and hear) it. *wanders off in Middle-earth*

Got time?

If you do, visit Subservient Chicken. Mind you, it's a bit creepy. Imagine having this online creepy chicken obey all your commands (except of course for kinky ones). I spent my afternoon having him clap, jump, do cartwheels, run around, act crazy, play dead, and lay eggs. Talk about weird.

La talagang magawa eh.

Initially I found the chicken to be intriguing, disturbing, and wonderful. However, due to my short attention span the chicken ultimately became infuriating as she would not do the bizarre things I wanted her to do. (I assume its a she as if it were female, it would be a rooster, right?) Anyway, the only thing between me and making my own truly interactive subservient chicken website is a guy in a chicken suit. It wouldn't be the first bizarre website I spawned, after all, I did convince my friend to buy LesbiansForBush.US
Rock on.

The Da Vinci Code

I've finished reading The Da Vinci Code a month ago but haven't had the time to post what I think of it. Probably because I was still deciding whether I like it or not and whether it was deserving of the raves and controversies. And so you ask "was it?" Well to tell you the truth, I was not really impressed. Then again I may have expected too much of it. Anyway you'll find below a list of some of the rants I have about this book. Some of you may agree or not, but be advised that this is my blog and I will write what I think, not you. (Bug off if you have any complaints or better yet, make your own blog!) Aherm. Sorry got carried away there. Anyway, carry on.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!

  1. Yeah, it has some great ideas, an intriguing plot, and unbelievable twists. But that's the thing -- sa dami ng twists parang na-OA-an ako. Mystery is an excellent device in literature but in this case, I would say it's a tad overdone.
  2. There's also the issue of character development, or lack thereof, I should say. We know nothing about the characters -- their thought processes, emotional states, or issues. Parang linagay lang sa libro to increase the book's appeal to the market. It's like just any other theory book, but with the inclusion of characters and dialogue, which of course (if you ask me) did nothing to improve it. One of the joys of reading is for us (the readers) to get to know the characters, endearing them to us. But nooo, not in this book. Kaya wala akong ka-amor-amor kay Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu eh. With all that's happening to them, I could care less.
  3. I read it in 3 days. That's how bored I am of this book. I wasn't really looking forward to finishing it in a day or two. It just didn't appeal to me. I found it shallow.
  4. Disney? Little mermaid?? Huh???
  5. The story didn't stay with me. Parang after a day or so, wala na, nalimutan ko na ang story, even the characters' names. That's saying something because I usually remember the characters of the books I read, especially if their roles are well-written (ie Dolores Price, Frodo, Lily Bart).
  6. As one reviewer said, "this book is an affront on so many levels." And I say amen to that!

For me, the good thing that came out of reading this book is the realization that my faith wasn't perturbed one little bit. I was really surprised. I was even prepared to question my faith (once again) but it didn't happen. I guess my issues lie with the church not Jesus/God. Contrary to what others say, I don't think this would shake your religious beliefs.

My overall opinion? It was not THAT great a book. I would be surprised if some people would say that it has the makings of a classic. I suggest buy yourself something that's worth your money. Just borrow a copy of the Da Vinci Code from someone else.

Onga pala if you want to read the book, here are some pointers that would probably be of some help. Thanks Bibeduck!

Can you believe that...

... my interim course is officially done today? I can't believe it either. Barely two weeks has passed since our first class and now, my instructor wrapped up the whole course! Tomorrow we'll be handing in our (take home) final exam and that's it. You might think that we didn't learn anything during these three weeks. On the contrary, the subject matter was so condensed that you'd have to devote all your free time in studying the different cultures. Ang dami ko palang di alam sa mundo. The plight of Kashmir, China's one-child policy, the treatment of women in various countries -- these are just some of the issues that we tackled during these past weeks. Nakakalungkot na nangyayari pala talaga to. I guess I'm such a naive idealist that I tend to ignore these kind of situations. Now I know better. I guess the knowledge and acceptance that these things exist is the first step in helping the victims of these situations. If only I can do something tangible, that would be even better.

Anyway I have the whole day tomorrow to go gallivanting around Old Orchard Mall. Showing pa Harry Potter 3. This is going to be fun mwahaha!
