A Surprising Day

It's been hell today. Everything that could go wrong went wrong (well almost). But the day wasn't a complete disaster for I got a surprise waiting for me at home. It was my mom's pakidala to my uncle who went to the Philippines two weeks ago. I got 6 DVDs, some writing pads from my sis, The Soddit book (a parody of The Hobbit), and 4 plastic covers. Hehe.

The Horror of Enrollment

Nag-ngingitngit ako sobra! I thought moving here means a smoother enrollment process. Big mistake. I am so irritated with what happened today. I wanted to enroll 3 subjects this summer: ANT 202 (Anthropology, 3 units), BIO 151 (Microbiology, 4 units), and BIO 132 (Anatomy and Physio 2, 4 units). Well it seems daunting but I really have to take all of these subjects so my second sem won't be that filled up. I planned on taking an interim course -- the usual 8 weeks will now take 3 weeks to finish -- for my ANT 202... and it worked. I tried enrolling BIO 132 and 151 but alas, the teller told me it won't do since there's a conflict with 151 and 202. I told her, No it's ok, it's an interim course. It turned out that 202 has its last day on June 7, 9:00-1:00pm and 151 will start on the same day, 11:30am-1pm. Just one day, just one friggin' day... so I couldn't take 151. Drat. It's the most in-demand Bio course and I couldn't take it. All I wanted is just a freaking Microbio subject for this semester! Granted there's a conflict, but that's just one day! C'mon I have to finish it within summer of this year! Waah!

Seminar on Investing

I am loooving my school more and more each day.

Why?

Well I've just found out that they'll be conducting a seminar about investing on Monday FREE OF CHARGE. Isn't that cool?! My first step towards financial freedom - I like! Hopefully some of the questions I have regarding investing and business will be answered. Of course I don't expect a thorough discussion on the said subject matter what with the seminar lasting for just one hour. Nevertheless, I fervently hope it will explain the basic points of investing. (Ngek kala mo naman madaming perang i-invest!)

Oh and btw I watched Cyrano de Bergerac last Friday. It's based on the book by Edmond Rostand. The story is set in 17th-century Paris and the main plot revolves around Cyrano, a valiant and articulate nobleman who is secretly in love with Roxane. Cyrano, however, can't profess his love to Roxane. Despite his gifts, he thinks she won't love him because of his looks (he's got an enormous nose, a protuberance as he calls it). Anyway the play I watched was not that great. It was weak in terms of the portrayal of supporting characters, the props, and on audience impact but the three main characters (Cyrano, Christian, and Roxanne) did really well. I'm sure if my friends were here, we would laugh our heads off. Kakatawa talaga si Cyrano!

More on them surveys

Finally had the time to really sit down and just surf the net. Instead of reading notes and making outlines (like I promised myself I would), I find myself sitting down in front of a PC here in the school's cybercafe and blogging like crazy. Today's a good day, I feel it (provided of course I don't flunk my exam in NUR 104).

Here's another one of them surveys, borrowed from Pen.

What's in your box?

HP and SW news

The Official Harry Potter website has a new design. Looks good. The Marauder's Map is a neat touch. Official trailer is also online. Niiiiiice. POA has always been my fave book of the series and I think this is going to be much better than the previous two. It better be. Hey wait... there's a new director for HP 4??? According to the website, MIKE NEWELL of "Mona Lisa Smile" and "Four Weddings and A Funeral" will direct HP GoF. Hmmm...

And btw look at this:

Star Wars OT DVD

Looks good eh? Here's the entire article about it. Thanks to Ginny for the link. Dang! This year is really going to cost me a lot, what with my plans of getting LOTR DVDs (theatrical and extended editions), Star Wars OT DVD, and Season 2-6 of XWP. Drat.

Post-Spring Break Rants

I'm not feeling so good these past few days, especially last week. Not that I didn't enjoy my spring break. I certainly did -- to an extent. Watching Xena episodes and curling up on a chair with a good book -- that's my idea of a break. It's just that with nothing exciting to do last week, my mind sort of went haywire and I started thinking of things gone wrong. And usually when I'm like that, it's either I get paranoid or catatonic. Blame it on hormones or on Xena but believe me or not, it did me (some) good. I realized that for quite a while (a year and a half to be exact), I've been such a complete whiner. I was (always) thinking of the what-should-have-beens and the what-ifs that I forgot to just live in the moment. Life is slowly passing me by and all I can think of are things that are beyond my reach or situations I can't change. I'd better get my act together or I could end up as one of those people who are angry all the time.

My first Friday Five post ever:

What was...

1. ...your first grade teacher's name?

err I forgot... Ooops.

2. ...your favorite Saturday morning cartoon?

I don't watch cartoons anymore. Nothing good eh. But I remember watching He-man and She-ra before. Does Bioman and Shaider count? Yep, I was an avid fan of those shows when I was a kid. Heehee.

Her name's Ellen, my best friend in high school. :)

4. ...your favorite breakfast cereal?

Any chocolate-coated cereals

5. ...your favorite thing to do after school?

Sleep or eat or read - depends on my mood.

Hey it's spring break! Woot!

Crossing Boundaries

Ever since I can remember, I've been afraid of shots, of needles, any sharp objects related to medicine. But you know what? Luck is on my side; bad luck that is. Tomorrow we'll be starting on a new topic and you guessed it -- it'll be about administering injections. Sheesh. All my sympathetic nervous system can think of is my flight response:

Ah what the hell. I know I'll be doing this sooner or later. Might as well do it ASAP. Let's get it over with. I guess it's time to step out of my comfort zone and, as Vienna Teng said, I've got to "meet my storm."

And so I leave to you a song from Vienna Teng's new album, Warm Strangers. I think it's a fitting tribute to anyone who's afraid of leaving their boundaries. C'mon let's chase our horizons, no matter the distance.

Harbor

by Vienna Teng

we're here where the daylight begins

the fog on the streetlight slowly thins

water on water's the way

the safety of shoreline fading away

sail your sea

meet your storm

all I want is to be your harbor

the light in me

will guide you home

all I want is to be your harbor

fear is the brightest of signs

the shape of the boundary you leave behind

so sing all your questions to sleep

the answers are out there in the drowning deep

you've got a journey to make

there's your horizon to chase

so go far beyond where we stand

no matter the distance

I'm holding your hand

New Grounds

We had our first clinical day in Lutheran General Hospital yesterday. What a place! Hopefully I could sneak and take some pictures. Ganda ng place! And imagine, every room has its own computer where you can log in all the details, the SOAP notes, progress notes, and what-have-you of the patient! Galing! Makes me want to cry when I think of the healthcare system status in Pinas. BTW as one of the requirements in this clinical rotation, we are going to observe an ambulatory and a GI surgery! Cool! Can't wait!

Note: Still no word from the department I applied to a week ago (Read this post).
