In the Dentist's Chair

I hate going to the dentist.

I hate sitting in their stupid chair, just lying there in the most uncompromising position, with your mouth wide open for the world to see, your lip numb from the medication, and your drool dribbling from your mouth. While all this is happening to you, your dentist and their assistants all peek into that mouth of yours, jabbering on what's wrong with the world and all that. Puhleez.

I hate their instruments and equipment, making the ordeal worse for you. I especially hate their f*cking drill. I don't think I can ever have compassion for dentists. I'm scarred for life.


(Just got back from the dentist and I know you can tell I did not have a nice session. I never do.)

I love that chair. It's so relaxing. I also like looking in the mirror and noticing that my jaw is not swollen at all although I swear it felt like it was. And the drill, so nice how it produces mist on contact. When they floss my teeth, I could taste the cherry flavor in my gums. Also, what a unique bib.

my dentist was always nice. she's the same dentist i've had since i was two, and she used to reward me with little stickers and balloon animals if i was good while in the chair. and every year when i got for my annual check-up, it's like visiting an old friend.

except when she's drilling my tooth. it still effing hurts. haha!

YOu know what? If you are as old as I am then I think we may share the same experiences to make us fear dentists. The same fear for doctors i had when I was a kid. Children my age were always frightened with a trip to the doctor or the dentist making them evil, so to speak. Or the "gagawin kang vetsin ng intsik". This weird sense of humor somehow got to my psyche. Now, my children are the ones who would ask me to take them to the dentist and I admire them. They never fear going to one. Kaya ayun, I have to put up a front and bravely sit on that chair everytime we go.

Apir! I hate the dentist too. I visited mine just last week for a cleaning and almost punched her in the face while she happily drilled away. She kept on asking me if it hurt and I was like "For chrissakes my entire mouth is bleeding, what do you think???"

Born to Gram Stain1

That's what my Microbiology professor told me during lab -- I was "born to Gram stain." That's because all of the slides that I did, using the different differential stains, came out very nice and perfect (her words). She would usually use my slides as examples for the whole class *insert blush*. I guess I'm just happy that my professor acknowledged my hardwork I've put into this course. Ever since classes started 4 weeks ago, I feel happy, almost giddy, on days that I have Micro. I just love what I'm doing right now, especially during lab: inoculating and culturing bacteria, analyzing them based on their sizes and shapes, reactions with different media, and results of differential/selective staining, and perusing the slides under the microscope. I don't know what it is about Micro that excites me so. I just love it. But I'm not going to lie; it still is hard but I think it's bearable because I love the subject. Maybe it's my calling... hah, that's a thought.

I'm actually (seriously) considering pursuing a degree in Microbiology. I even looked into the Micro programs of University of Washington, University of Texas, and University of Illinois, among others. Seems overwhelming especially when I saw two courses of Physics included in their curricula.2 Oh well. I guess I'm just going to stick to my 2 degrees. Yoko ng Physics ha. Blegh.


1 Gram stain is the most commonly and widely used differential staining method. It's a four-part procedure that is used for the identification of a bacteria, whether they have a thick or thin cell wall.
2 Well let's just say we (Physics and I) have a long standing feud dating back years ago. I hate that subject. Wait, hate is a mild word. Let's try again. I abhor Physics, with a passion. Hehe.

ugh. my memories of highschool microbiology consist mainly of an eccentric teacher and her pet slime mold.

Though, I do use myxomycetes in sentences from time to time just to stump obnoxious sonsofbitches :D

dominattyrix is drooling!!!

the matrix rocks. i must have watched part one >60 times already. it's my fave but i wouldn't mind watching all discs. i like it that this movie is so accessible to students. it's a huge help when we talk about issues/themes in metaphysics, so our discussions in philo becomes more exciting.

also looking FWD to watching the additional scenes in LOTR. star wars brings me back to the good old 70's. i was too young to watch star wars but return of the jedi, sa RIZAL theatre ko yata napanood yan. hahaha.

gadh i feel old.

Celebrity Blogs

I had no idea that blogging is 'big' in the Philippines right now. When I left for the US, I knew only a few people who have (and consistently update) blogs or LJs. Back then, blogging was considered eclectic. However, over the years, many have embraced the phenomenon and jumped on the bandwagon. Today I learned that both Globe and Smart are now offerring blogging through MMS. Aba blogging is slowly becoming the 'in' thing (in Pinas) ha! Don't know if I should be happy about it or not. I mean a few years ago, having a blog is considered unconventional and so is considered cool but now it's everywhere. Well, whatever.


Due to blog-hopping, I found out that many Filipino celebrities are now into blogging. There's Jim Paredes, Ala Paredes, Paula Peralejo, and I swear, Lucky Manzano. Hmmm.

Of Dreams and (In)Actions

I came across this website. One particular entry caught my eye and because of it, I started asking these questions:

Would you consider yourself a person who makes things happen? Or a person who just watches things as they unfold? Do you take action to make your dreams come true? Or do you just wait for the universe to hand out things your way? How do you deal with your dreams? With fear? With denial? With acceptance? Or with regret? Do you have dreams at all or have you forgotten about them? What if life doesn't give you choices, what then? Do you simply give up or not? When things don't go our way, is it better to fight or take flight?

I envy those people who just go out and make a difference, not only in their lives but in the world as well. I don't think I'm brave enough to do it. I guess I belong to the group of people who don't take chances, who believe that asking too much is a sin, and who take whatever the universe offers and stopping at that. I guess it all comes to one thing -- fear. Fear of failure, fear of denial, fear of not accomplishing what I set out to do, fear of falling into the abyss and not being able to get up. That's all there is to it I guess... fear. But I don't want to be afraid anymore. It's suffocating. The space you inhabit is slowly shrinking to the size of a keyhole -- your comfort zone. It's just sad because I see people afraid of reaching for their goals and yet, I believe, they are capable of great achievements and so much more.

Anyway starting tomorrow, I'm going to put into effect a suggestion by Ala -- keeping a wishbook. I've always wanted to do one way back when I saw an article in Reader's Digest. I can't remember much but what I do remember is this guy accomplishing almost all of his dreams and crossing them out in his wishlist. I think he has a thousand of these dreams and he has accomplished most of them. It was inspiring. Maybe, just maybe, putting down all my dreams and wishes on paper will make it all come true. Sabi nga ni Ala, it's like 'cementing your desires.' Hmm.

For me, it's fear of disturbing/challenging the Filipino set of values. It's a very real obstacle when it comes to making things happen.

James: hey i didn't think of that. that's a good one. a biggie/toughie for us filipinos (most asians, in fact) since going against the convention, of what is generally accepted, is a very serious offense. :(

Rain: I have no problem making a difference in my community although i wouldn't classify it as a big difference :) i've done some community service (ie soup kitchen, food pantry) and i love it! and you're right. it's a lot easier, making a difference in the world. what i'm anxious about is if i can follow my dreams and reach for my goals. i'm troubled by the fact that i'm afraid of doing everything i can to fulfill them. *sigh*

Still Alive... Barely

Grabe ha 2nd week pa lang naturete agad ako. I barely got out of school alive. Critical thinking assignments, clinical training stuff, Microbio labs, and tons of books to read -- these made my 2nd week hell. Not to mention 2 online classes!!! Ang hirap pala 'pag online ang mga klase mo. Kala ko madali, kakaloka pala. I don't know whether I'm on the right track or not. I don't know how to pace myself so that I have ample time alloted for each of my subjects. I ended up going online most of the time. Good thing it's a long weekend. That should give me enough time to sort it all out... I hope.

Happy birthday pala sa bro ko! :)

15. You get up in the morning and go online before getting your coffee.

16. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. :)

17. You're reading this and nodding and laughing.

18. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

19. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

20. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list.

AND NOW U R LAUGHING at yourself.
